Irishman shot dead in suspected gang-related attack in Mallorca

AN Irishman has been shot dead on a Spainish holiday island.

The incident happened just after 9pm last night (August 17) in Costa de la Calma, in the south west region of Mallorca.

Local police, the Guardia Civil, have said they believe the shooting was an attempt to settle scores between rival gangs.

Media in the area confirmed to The Irish Post that the victim, who has not yet been named and is believed to be in his 30s, was walking with his wife and friends when he was approached from behind by a hooded gunman.

The gunman then fired four shots into the victim's back before fleeing the scene.

The Guardia's criminal division suspect that the killing may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Police have also said that there are indications that the victim was a tourist.

The man was taken to the Son Espases hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed they are aware of the incident and are providing consular assistance.

Spanish police are expected to give a full statement later today.
