Irishman shot dead in suspected murder suicide on New York construction site

AN IRISHMAN has been shot dead following a suspected murder-suicide on a construction site in New York.

Christopher Sayers, 37 and whose parents are originally from Dingle, Co Kerry, died following the early morning incident at a high rise site at 645 West 59th Street last Thursday, October 5.

According to local reports, Mr Sayers - a carpenter by trade - was killed by former worker Samuel Perry, 44, on the 37th floor of the Manhattan building site two days after the Irish site foreman dismissed him.

Police said they searched the building and found Perry on the fifth floor, also shot in the head.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Deputy Chief Christopher McCormack told reporters at the scene that Perry was known as "a bit of a hothead."

In a tribute to the deceased Irishman, the New York City District Council of Carpenters said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our dear brother, Christopher Sayers, a great carpenter, union brother and friend.

"In these trying times, let’s not forget that we are strongest when we stick together and commit to the promise that our District Council will always provide help to our union families."

Muiris Bric, the former President of The Kerrymen’s Association in New York, told Radio Kerry that the Irish community in New York are in shock.

"All the people I've spoken to are in shock, it's unbelievable. They just can't seem to get around it. They are shocked, really shocked."

Paying tribute to the Irishman, friends said: "Words can't describe what a man you were. Kindest most generous person I ever knew.

"Always put others before himself. Thank you for everything my brother, I know you will be watching over me as you always have.

"Your memory will always be in my heart. Rest in Peace."

Christopher Sayers will be laid to rest later today October 10 following a service at Our Lady Of Mercy Church on Long Island, New York.
