AN IRISHMAN is reported to have died by an apparent suicide at an airport in Thailand.
Local papers in Bangkok report that the 35-year-old jumped 15 metres to his death from the gate three arrivals hall in Suvarnabhumi Airport to the ground floor below.
The Bangkok Post reports that the unnamed victim was discovered unconscious on the ground floor on Thursday and rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later.
The Northern Irishman, who was said to be travelling on a British passport, had been attempting to raise funds to fund his fare home at the time of his death.
It is reported that the distressed man was taken into protective custody after an initial suicide the same day attempt at the airport.
He revealed to officers that he did not have the money to purchase a ticket home to the North of Ireland.
Calls were put to the British Embassy in an attempt to raise some funds to get the man home.
After telling officers that he wanted to go for a cigarette, the man is said to have ran to a bridge between gates three and four at the airport and jumped the 15 metres to his death.
A spokesperson for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: “We have been notified of the death of a British national in Bangkok. We are assisting family members at this difficult time, and will remain in contact with local authorities.”
