AN IRISHMAN has been jailed for nine years for shooting another man 'in self defence' in a broad daylight central London attack.
Patrick Adams admitted assaulting and seriously injuring his victim during an assault in Clerkenwell in December 2013.
Patrick Adams of Percival Street EC1, was sentenced today to nine years in prison after he appeared in custody at Woolwich Crown Court.
Adams, 60 and the son of Irish parents, pleaded guilty to assaulting and seriously injuring a man during an altercation nearly three years ago when he appeared at the same court on November 28.
He was charged after being extradited back to Britain from the Netherlands last year after an investigation was conducted by detectives from the Trident and Area Crime Command.
On Sunday, December 22, 2013, Adams' 51-year-old victim, who was not named by Metropolitan Police, was driving along Wyclif Street, near to the junction with St John Street in Islington.
At approximately 10am, as he drew near the junction, he stopped and was approached by a man, identified as Patrick Adams.
The resulting altercation between the men resulted in the man being shot.
London Ambulance Service attended and the victim was taken to hospital, where as a result of his injuries he remained in a coma for several weeks.
CCTV recovered by detectives captured nearly all the shooting and was crucial in piecing together what had happened.
Detective Inspector Glenn Butler from the Trident and Area Crime Command, said: "Adams was extradited back to the UK to face charges in connection with this incident, having attempted to evade justice.
"Today, he has been jailed for his crime. Detectives carried out a full and thorough investigation and have secured a conviction even though the victim has never cooperated with officers.
"It was clear both men knew each other but the exact nature of the dispute has never been established.
"Adams stated that during the fight with the victim, he took the victim's gun and shot him acting in self defence but by pleading guilty today it is clear he has accepted his criminal actions.
"This case demonstrates the Metropolitan Police will pursue those who use firearms and ensure they face the legal consequences."
