Irishman Ger Scully 30, dies in collision with road train in Western Australia

AN Irishman who was killed in a serious road collision in Australia at the weekend has been named as 30-year-old Ger Scully from Galway.

Scully is from Woodpark, Annaghdown, Co. Galway.

His vehicle collided with a road train near the small town of South Hedland, Western Australia, at around 6pm local time on Sunday.

His parents Pat and Bridie Scully live in Galway.

Mr Scully left Ireland for Australia a number of years ago and had apparently been planning to come home to Ireland for Christmas.

He had been working as a miner in the Western Australia state.

Scully was planning on leaving Australia next week and travelling while en route back to Ireland, starting in Vietnam.

Perth Now reported that Mr Scully died at the scene when his white Toyota Hilux collided with the road train on the Great Northern Highway, just outside the town of South Hedland - some 1,600km from the nearest city of Perth.

A road train is a method of trucking used to transport goods in remote parts of Australia, consisting of a large truck pulling several long trailers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs are providing consular assistance to Mr Scully’s parents, along with his two brothers and two sisters, as focus shifts to transporting Mr Scully’s body back to Ireland for burial.
