Irishman charged in connection with gang rape in the United States named

AN Irishman charged in connection with a gang rape at a US hotel has been named as Patrick Mooney.

The 25-year-old, originally from Dublin, was arrested on March 6 and charged with first-degree rape.

It comes after a woman alleged that Mooney and six to seven other men took turns sexually assaulting her in a New Orleans hotel room on November 25, 2017.

The woman claimed she had met Mooney at the Funky 544 Bar on Bourbon Street in the city and the two returned to a local hotel after drinking alcohol.

The warrant for Mooney’s arrest states that several men then entered the room in which they were staying and raped her, with Mooney also attacking her.

She also alleges that the men hit and slapped her, adding that she could only remember bits and pieces of the incident because she had been drinking heavily.

The warrant said that after the alleged attack, the men gave the complainant a t-shirt and told her to leave the room.

It’s understood that Mooney was released from prison on March 12 on a bond of $50,000 (€40,000).

If convicted of first-degree rape, the Dubliner could face a life sentence if the prosecution are able to prove that more than one person was involved in the alleged incident.
