Irish woman Stephanie Hartnett dies in freak wave incident in Vietnam

AN Irish woman in her 60s has drowned whilst on holiday with friends in Vietnam.

Stephanie Hartnett - a Limerick native now living in Mallow, Co. Cork - was in shallow water at a beach resort on Saturday, October 10 when she was swept out to sea by a freak wave.

Onlookers made attempts to save her, but she was pronounced dead by a medic shortly after being brought to shore.

The 64-year-old had travelled to southeast Asia with a group of close friends for "the holiday of a lifetime", the Herald reports.

She was a Director at the Anchor Treatment Centre in Mallow, Co. Cork that tackles addiction problems.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs told The Irish Post that it is providing Ms Hartnett’s family with consular assistance and help to repatriate her body.
