Irish woman dies after yacht capsizes off South African coast

AN IRISH woman has died after the yacht she was travelling on capsized off the west coast of South Africa.

The 49-year-old, who had been living in the country's Western Cape province, was one of three crew members on-board the yacht, which was reportedly sailing from Langebaan to Cape Town on Monday, February 1.

A 61-year-old Scottish man also died in the incident, while a 66-year-old Irish man, who lives in the Western Cape, had managed to get to shore and raise the alarm. He was not injured in the incident.

South African rescue crews found the vessel broken up on rocks along the coast when they attended the scene.

It is not yet known what caused the yacht to collide with the coastline and it could not be confirmed whether it had capsized prior to running aground.

SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) are conducting investigations following the accident.

Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the death of an Irish citizen in the Western Cape and that consular assistance is being provided to the family.
