Irish woman believed to be among those killed in Tunisia shooting

REPORTS are emerging that an Irish woman is among those who have been killed in today’s gun attack in Tunisia.

The Irish Independent is reporting that a middle-aged woman from Co. Meath who was holidaying in the North African country with her husband has been shot and killed.

Meath TD Ray Butler told the paper that her husband is “absolutely distraught”.

Two gunmen opened fire in the Sousse holiday resort in Tunisia earlier today – an area that is very popular with Irish tourists.

Local authorities confirmed that at least 28 were killed in the incident, including a number of foreign nationals.

It is understood that the Irish woman was on the beach at the time, near the two hotels where the majority of the shooting is believed to have taken place.

Reports indicate that the gunmen opened fire on the beach before entering the hotels.

One of the gunmen was shot and killed by local police; while the second has been apprehended alive.

The motive for the shooting is still unclear.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin has opened a dedicated line for those who are concerned about family or friends in the area to contact.

"Anyone with concerns about this incident should call the Department on 01 418 0200," the Department said in a statement.

"Irish citizens in Sousse are advised to follow the instructions of the police, tour operators, and their hotel staff."
