Irish woman to appear in court charged with murder of her fiancé in Australia

AN IRISH woman is to appear in a Sydney court charged with the murder of her Irish fiancé at their home in Padstow, Australia.

Police have said father-of three David 'Daithí' Walsh, from Enniscorthy Co. Wexford, was killed following an altercation at the property 22 kilometres outside Sydney.

Emergency services were called to a home on Watson Road, Padstow shortly after midnight local time on Saturday morning after reports of a fight involving a number of people.

Police said three women and a man were at the home when a second man known to the women attended the property and an altercation broke out.

Police found 29-year-old David Walsh, critically injured with a stab wound to his neck.

Despite efforts by paramedics, Mr Walsh, who worked in construction, died at the scene.

Cathrina Cahill, 25, also from Wexford and fiancée to Mr Walsh, was arrested at the scene alongside a 36-year-old Australian man.

Ms Cahill was charged with the murder of David Walsh, and will appear in Burwood Court on Wednesday, February 22.

Independent Wexford County Councillor and childhood friend to Mr Walsh, John O'Rourke told The Irish Post the community in Enniscorthy was "numb."

"I knew David personally, I worked with David when he worked with Ajax Athletic here in Enniscorthy and again when he played for Enniscorthy United.

"The David I knew was boisterous, outgoing, friendly, and sport orientated.

"The community is in deep shock and numb, the community in Moran Park will rally together and support his family as much as they possibly can at this very sad time."

Mr Walsh's former football club Enniscorthy United also paid tribute to the "hardworking" sportsman.

"As with some of our players, I played with David and he also played for me.

"A good player who always gave his best and when I managed him, was always respectful, hard working and good to be around.

"Really shocking that someone so young should be taken."

Only back from Dublin and just heard the terrible news of our former player David (Mocha) Walsh's passing. As with some...
