AN Irish tourist had to be resuscitated by police in Berlin after losing consciousness while fondling himself in custody, German authorities have said.
The bizarre incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when police encountered a 31-year-old man staggering along Joachimsthaler St in west Berlin after he left a nearby nightclub.
The tourist, who was under the influence of drugs, could not remember the name of his hotel and was therefore detained for the "protection and preservation of his health".
Officers put the man in the back of their emergency vehicle where he quickly fell asleep on the way to the police station.
But the Irish national woke up a short time later and suddenly began masturbating in his seat, reports German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
When the police asked him to refrain, the man is alleged to have bent over and displayed his bare bottom.
Following his arrival in custody, the man began acting irrationally again and was pushed into a seat by police.
The holidaymaker then suddenly collapsed and had to be resuscitated by the officers after he stopped breathing and showed no signs of life.
Paramedics were called to the scene and the man was taken to hospital, where he continued to act in an aggressive manner.
Tests confirmed that he was under the influence of various narcotics, according to Bild.
The man was later released from hospital and is being investigated for insulting and resisting law enforcement officials.
