DINEKA Maguire from Co. Fermanagh beat an international field to win the 28th World Bog Snorkeling Championships last weekend.
130 competitors, of both genders, gathered from around the world to Waen Rhydd Bog on the outskirts of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, mid-Wales at the weekend, to take part in the event.
In scooping victory, the 18-year-old saw off challenging competitors from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.
Maguire smashed the world bog snorkelling record by just over a second when she swam two lengths of the 55-metre trench in one minute and 23.13 seconds.
The teenager from Belleek has been competing for six years in the sport.
She previously held the fastest time for a woman to complete the race in 2010, and was duly entered into the Guinness World Records book.
Bob Greenough, one of the competition’s organisers this year, said: “This is Dineka’s first year as a senior. I couldn’t believe her time.”
The two trenches used in the mid-Wales town constitute “the Wembley” of bog-snorkeling, a sport which has grown in popularity — and competitiveness — over the last decade.
