POLICE in London are investigating the death of an Irish resident who died in a taxi following an abortion in England – days after she was refused a termination under Irish law.
The 32-year-old foreign national had travelled from Dublin for the termination in January 2012 but died hours afterwards.
She had undergone the abortion at a Marie Stopes clinic in West London.
It is thought that she had a condition that raised the risk of miscarriage but her husband, who spoke anonymously this week about their ordeal, claims that they received little help from the Irish authorities before travelling to Britain for an abortion at 20 weeks.
Police in London have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the case.
A file will be prepared for the Crown Prosecution Services.
The Marie Stopes organisation responsible for the clinic refused to comment on the case on the basis of client-confidentiality.
An inquest into the death has yet to be held as the police investigation is on-going.
The woman’s husband said that his wife had a child in Ireland in 2010 but the pregnancy was painful and complicated by extensive fibroids.
The man, in Ireland on a student visa at the time, and his daughter are still living in Ireland.
