IRISH people in Australia have been left outraged by an article criticising Irish pubs as “old-school dives” for people who love “dodging vomit and flying fists” .
Anthony Sharwood, a journalist for news.com.au, also hit out at the pubs’ “problem” clientele in an opinion piece for the popular website.
He added that Irish pubs have had their day following the closure of two pubs in Sydney.
Mr Sharwood went on to describe the typical Irish pub as “old-school dives which are as dark and dingy as the Guinness beer they serve” for people who love “dodging vomit and flying fists”.
He also referred to anti-social behaviour that he claims takes place in Irish pubs, saying: “When police release the annual list of the state's most dangerous drinking venues, there's usually just a paltry two or three Irish pubs in the top 10.”
One Irish pub owner quoted in the article was mocked over his accent.
Mr Sharwood wrote: “'Irish pubs haven’t had their day'...he told us in his sing-song Irish lilt”.
He took to Twitter to further stir controversy, telling one offended user “I'm kinda wondering what an Irish echo sounds like. Guessing it kinda goes ‘to be sure... to be sure... to be sure... etc’
