AN IRISH pub in the US is hoping that, when it comes to matters of love. like the old adage goes, the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach.
The Shannon Rose in New Jersey has an appetizing offer for any women considering the time-honoured Irish practise of proposing to their partner on ‘Leap Day’.
A tradition dating back to fifth century Ireland, the legend goes that patron saint pair St Patrick and St Brigid came up with the idea of reserving February 29 – a date that only occurs every four years when a leap year happens – as a day for women to pop the question.
Now, as an extra incentive, any woman brave enough to get down on one knee come the big day will land a free meal for two every month for the next year.
An appetiser, two drinks for one meal per month over the next year to women who pops the question.
“We figured it would be a great offer to our local community, tying it in to our Irish roots. What we do best at the Shannon Rose is Irish hospitality,” said Marketing Manager Cailey Dimitropoulos told NJ Biz.
Passionate Irish Americans, the owners of the Shannon Rose, Ed Doherty and his daughter Shannon are so enthusiastic about their Celtic roots, they even important decorations for their pub from the Emerald Isle.
The pub made headlines back in September with the creation of an Irish coffee which, at 33 gallons
“We’re just trying to be present in our community and have an offer that speaks to the community around us, always tying back to the Irish roots,” Dimitropoulos said/ “|We’re in February and going into our Saint Patrick’s Day season, which is our favorite time of the year,” he added.
“Leap year only comes every four years so this also kind of allows us to stay relevant in the conversation of what’s going on.”
