Irish politician breaks silence over grooming by paedophile priest Malachy Finegan

SINN FEIN's Conor Murphy has revealed how he suffered physical abuse at the hands of notorious paedophile priest Fr Malachy Finegan.

In an exclusive interview with the Press Association, the MLA for Newry and Armagh describing the priest as a 'violent, volatile, bullying drunkard' and called for a full investigation.

The politician attended St Colman's College in Newry, Co. Down in the late 1970s.

He said the cleric had beat him with a stick after he was dragged into an office.

"He was always prone to more violence than was perhaps to do with discipline," he said.

Mr Murphy said the priest also made suggestive and lewd comments towards him.

"And then he suddenly flipped, as I was almost expecting, he sat me down and started asking me personal questions - did I smoke, did I drink?

"Bear in mind I was 14. Did I go out with girls? Did I masturbate? Did I love him? This type of conversation.

"I can't remember my responses but I wasn't shocked by the conversation, because I had been forewarned by other pupils that this was what was likely to happen."

Fr Malachy Finegan, who died in 2002, taught in St Colman's from 1967 to 1976.

He has also been accused of abuse while working as a parish priest in Clonduff, Co. Down.

Last week former President of Ireland Mary McAleese said the priest 'seriously, physically and sadistically abused' her younger brother.
