Irish plus-sized model reveals how she was fat shamed on birthday trip to Liverpool

AN IRISH model has revealed how she was fat shamed by a couple while celebrating her birthday in Liverpool.

Katie Higgins, 26, is a popular fashion and food blogger on Facebook and used her page to tell her 67,000 followers about the incident.

The plus-sized model wrote that she was out in a Liverpool restaurant with three friends celebrating her 26th birthday when the incident took place.

A man and woman, who she described as "intoxicated", sat in a booth next to them and began heckling her.

At one point, the "man shouted “Nobody likes a fat bird”, while his female companion "roared with laughter".

After ignoring the comments for a while, she asked her friends if they had heard it. They said they had heard "every word" but chose to ignore the comments so that she would not be hurt.

Ms Higgins said: "An insignificant creature had decided to pick me as his target to which I didn't react but yet felt like I was nothing."

"Because you are big, small, short, tall, nobody has the right to abuse you.

"I'm extremely lucky to have parents, grandparents, friends who accept me for me, and love me for me."

Ms Higgins told her story to radio presenter Neil Prendeville on Cork’s Red FM.

“My whole life I’ve been a bigger woman,” she told the DJ. “I have to make the most of what God gave me.”

“I’m quite secure in myself. What about women that are bigger than me or that didn’t have the same outlook as me?

“It was the first time in a long time that I got upset.”

Since posting the message on Facebook, Ms Higgins has been inundated by messages of support from her followers.
