Irish photographer's search for mystery man in picture

A PHOTOGRAPHER is attempting to trace a man in a photograph that he took in Co. Clare last year.

Peter Steedman captured the image on a trip home and asked The Irish Post for help to trace the man seen relaxing in the portrait.

While the photograph is in itself a beautiful portrait, the subject’s story makes it all the more interesting.

“The man in the photograph is called Patrick,” Peter said, whose mother hails from Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. “If memory serves me right, he was South American correspondent for the Irish Times, possibly freelance, when he was younger and interviewed Che Guevara in his prime.”

As with everyone he snaps, Peter promised the interesting character that he would give him a copy of the photograph.

Unfortunately, Peter lost the card with Patrick’s contact details.

Undeterred, on an annual trip to Ireland, Peter returned to Lahinch, Co. Clare, where he first met Patrick, in the hope he could present him with a framed copy of the picture.

While he never crossed paths with the journalist, he left the photograph in the local bar where they met in the hope that Patrick would return and have it at last.

Peter’s hope is that someone will recognise the man from the picture and be able to put the pair in touch.

The photo, along with Peter’s other images from his trip to Ireland and more, is on display in Burgh House and Hampstead Museum from December 10 to 14.
