Irish people urged NOT to travel to nations on official 'Green List' - which may feature just SIX countries

IRISH CITIZENS have been urged not to travel abroad this summer, even to countries included on the government's 'green list'.

The green list - which will state which destinations Irish people can travel to without having to worry about quarantining upon their return - was due to be published on Monday, but has since been pushed back to an unconfirmed date after a Cabinet meeting on the issue was postponed.

It's been speculated that the list in question may only include six countries deemed safe enough to travel to, in a potential blow to would-be holidaymakers in Ireland.

According to the Irish Daily Mail, Taoiseach Micheal Martin is looking to take a cautious approach with regards to the issue, particularly after much urging from the government for people to stay at home this summer.

There's no telling just yet which countries will be featured on the eventual list, particularly with the ever-changing battle forefront of the coronavirus battle in Europe.

There are fears that Spain for example could be excluded from the list in light of recent localised lockdowns in the north-east and south of the country.

There's also speculation that likes of Portugal, the United States and even the UK could also be excluded.

Once the list is published, it will be reviewed every two weeks and revised if necessary.

Despite this, Professor Gerry Killeen of University College Cork says that overseas holidays should be off limits altogether.

"We're looking for a green list where we can all totally relax, we're not there yet," he said.

"I know it's frustrating, but it is important that we start to build up a club of countries that are working together towards the same exit from this really difficult chapter."
