Irish paedophile told his victims their parents would die should they reveal abuse

AN Irish paedophile has been convicted of abusing three sisters from the same family in Co. Wexford.

Retired sweeper John Nugent was held in court as the victim statements of the three girls were read out.

According to The Irish Mirror, the 72-year-old man abused the three girls over a period of eight years.

As the statements were read out in the court, the jury heard that Nugent told the girls "No one will believe you. Your mam and dad will die of shock if you tell them."

At the time of the abuse happening, the three sisters lived as neighbours to Nugent and did chores and errands for him. The girls would buy cigarettes for Nugent and in delivering them to him, he would perform the abuse in his house.

One of the sisters recalled one incident where Nugent told her he had her little sister inside to lure her in, telling the older sister she had to rescue her.

The woman, now in her 30s recalled: "But she wasn’t in there and then he locked the front door and put the keys in his pocket. He grabbed me and threw me down on to the sofa and I hit my head off something.

"He told me there was no point in fighting it, that this is going to happen. He said if I let him he wouldn’t touch my sisters. Before he said that I was screaming and saying, ‘Let me go’, but then I just lay there."

The youngest sister of the three victims spoke of how her childhood was robbed by the sexual predator: "I remember my Communion and feeling so special, like a princess in my dress.

"The feeling of being special was replaced with fear. He stole my childhood and any good memories I had."

Nugent has faced more than 100 charges of indecent and sexual assault between the years of 1987-1995. The convicted man has been ordered to remain in custody until Thursday for sentencing,
