TWO NUNS, one Irish and one from New Zealand, had a traumatic experience after being trapped in a lift without food or water for three days.
The two Marist sisters have now been rescued and are recovering from the ordeal.
They became stuck in the elevator in a Marist convent near the Vatican in Rome after a power cut last Friday night, and were only discovered by a member of house staff when they turned up for work on Monday morning.
Police were called to get the women out after noise was heard coming from the lift.
According to Italian media, they called for help all weekend but the house was empty.
Neither of the nuns had a mobile phone with them so they could not telephone for help.
The Irish nun, aged 58 and the New Zealand nun, aged 68, were taken to hospital after the ordeal, both were suffering from dehydration.
The Associated Press were told that the nuns are "OK...but we are not talking to the press.”
However a spokesperson told The Irish Times, when asked if the nuns prayed much over the weekend while they were stuck, stated: “We don’t need to get stuck in a lift to pray. We pray all the time...
