IRISH Labour MPs Conor McGinn and Jon Cruddas are believed to be among the members of a new Catholics for Labour group which will officially launch this weekend.
Currently eight Catholic Labour MPs have signed up to the group, according to the Catholic Herald, which was formed ahead of the party’s annual conference, which kicks off in Brighton over the weekend.
Led by founding member Mike Kane, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, the group is intended to “explore and supply” the religion’s social teaching to public policy.
Prior to its official launch, which is due to take place at a Mass held at St Mary Magdalen’s Church in Brighton on Sunday, the MPs involved have signed a letter outlining the group’s ethos.
“Catholics for Labour has lofty ambitions. We are not about standing still or merely making observations of the world around us. Our hearts and minds are firmly focused on social justice and guided by the teaching of the Catholic faith we will work together to actively shape that world and prepare members for a life in public service,” it reads.
Mr Kane adds: “I’ve always seen my politics as inextricably tied to my faith and I truly believe there is a natural connection between Catholicism and the Labour movement.”
The other MPs involved are Emma Lewell-Buck, Stephen Pound, Keith Vaz, Andy McDonald and Sir David Crausby.
