Irish man's bid to cycle 350km across Cuba for charity

A LONDON-Irish man will cycle 350km through Cuba in a bid to raise money for cancer charity Teens Unite.

Dagenham based Michael Breen – whose mother hails from Limerick – will take on the challenge between October 17-25 on the Caribbean island.

The 30 year old will take a break from his role as Treasury Accountant for Crown Worldwide as he mounts his bike and encounters the country’s heat and humidity for the epic journey.

Joined by 14 fellow fundraisers, he will aim to raise awareness of the charity’s work and help improve the lives of 13-24 year olds battling cancer and other life limiting illnesses.

“I volunteered at the respite home in Broxbourne back in November and it was such a great experience,” he said.

“I enjoyed the day so much and was so touched by the stories of the wonderful young people whom Teens Unite are helping. This compelled me to do more and brought me to this wonderful challenge here.

“I love what Teens Unite do. They provide teenagers and young adults with the comfort they need as they battle cancer and the charity equips them with a more positive mind-set during their struggles.”

The cycle challenge begins in Cuba’s capital, Havana, and will take the riders along the coast, past tobacco and sugar cane fields and through farming communities.

Debbie Pezzani, CEO and Founder, Teens Unite said: “I will be joining the team of cyclists on the Cuba challenge and I can’t wait. It’s fantastic to know that everyone taking part is focussed on the same cause.

“I will be so proud to see the group cross the finish line and I would like to thank Michael and the rest of the Cuba team for all of their dedication.”

Since it was founded in 2007, Teens Unite continues to provide long-term support, from the moment a young person is diagnosed, throughout their treatment and beyond with motivational workshops to help restore their self-esteem.

The charity supports 620 young cancer sufferers across Britain.
