A MAN, who believes he might be Irish, has renewed his appeal to find his birth family who abandoned him 30 years ago.
Father-of-two Steve Hydes - who knows very little about his heritage - relaunched his search to be reunited with his family following his recent 30th birthday on March 31.
Here are eight facts about the extraordinary story:
1. Steven Gary Hydes was abandoned as a baby on April 10, 1986 at Gatwick Airport in London.
2. He was found wearing a baby grow and wrapped in a blanket in the ladies toilets by a woman who worked at the airport.
3. Doctors estimate that he was born on March 31, 1986 – while the date is not certain, Steve celebrates his birthday on this day.
Steve Hydes with his two children4. He was nicknamed Gary Gatwick after he was found – his birth certificate originally stated his name as Gary Laker. He was later adopted and changed his name to Steve Hydes.
5. Several years ago he had a DNA test done to find out where he originated from – the results showed that his birth parents could be from England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany or France. Steve previously claimed that he believes his mother could be Irish given the strict abortion laws that govern the country and that he was abandoned in Gatwick Airport – which is very accessible to flights from Ireland.
6. Steve began searching for his birth parents around 10 years ago with appeals on GMTV, local newspapers and he appeared in a documentary called Found.
Steve Hydes was adopted as a baby7. In 2011 he renewed his appeal, starring in a BBC Three documentary. He also appeared on the Late Late Show in Ireland.
8. He has a daughter and a son – which has inspired him, thirty years on, to continue his search to find out whether he has any siblings of his own.
