WHY did the swan cross the road? It sounds like the start of a joke but motorists in Limerick were probably asking themselves the question at the weekend.
On Sunday, a swan in the city somehow managed to find itself taking a stroll on Sarsfield Bridge in full view of bemused onlookers.
The bird’s complete refusal to abide by traffic safety rules soon alerted local man Jack, who quickly came to the rescue.
In a post on Facebook, Limerick Animal Welfare wrote: "Jack give us a call yesterday to say a swan was on the bridge and what could be done to help. After getting some information on the condition of the swan we talked to Jack about the possibility of either lifting or guiding the swan to the slipway and back to the safety of the water."
In the knowledge that Limerick Animal Welfare were 25 minutes away, Jack decided to take matters into his own hands and guide the majestic bird out of harm’s way.
First, Jack stopped traffic and guided the animal out into the road.
Then, he led the bird across the bridge to the other side.
He guided it down the steps...
towards the water...
then finally back home.
Quite the hero!
