Irish Liverpool fan Sean Cox regains consciousness after Anfield attack in April

IRISH Liverpool fan Sean Cox, who was placed in an induced coma after being attacked outside Anfield Stadium in April, has regained consciousness.

Mr Cox was in a serious condition when he was transferred back to Ireland in May after five weeks at Liverpool’s Walton Centre.

However the Meath man, who works for Irish firm Precision Cables, is said to be ‘progressing positively’.

Electric.ie, an information hub for Ireland’s electrical industry, released a statement with an update on Mr Cox’s condition.

“Séan Cox continues to recover slowly in Beaumont Hospital Dublin,” they said.

“He suffered a severe bleed to the brain following a horrific assault outside Liverpool football stadium ahead of Champions League tie with AC Roma on April 24.

“Séan has regained consciousness and is undergoing dedicated rehabilitation. Recovery is progressing positively but very slowly.

“His colleagues in Precision Cables are overwhelmed by the support and good wishes for Séan and his family that they receive on a daily basis.

“They would like once again to ask that you keep him in your prayers and that he will continue on his road to recovery.”

Fans and former players were among those to express their delight at the news on social media.

Mr Cox was in Liverpool for his side’s Champions League first leg tie against Roma on April 24 when he was attacked shortly before kick-off outside a pub near the stadium.

In May, Roma fan Daniele Sciusco, 29, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to violent disorder and was remanded in custody until sentencing.

Co-accused Filippo Lombardi, 21, pleaded not guilty to the same charge, as well as to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He has been remanded in custody until his trial in October.
