Irish in Britain urged to share 1916 memorabilia for online commemorative exhibitions

THE Irish in Britain are being urged to share personal mementos relating to 1916 at a commemorative event in London.

The Digital Repository of Ireland will hold a public collection day on Saturday, March 19 at the Irish Embassy, where memorabilia, including letters, diaries and photographs will be digitised, free of charge.

The digitised material will then be preserved and displayed within the Inspiring Ireland 1916 website through a series of online exhibitions.

It will ensure that Ireland’s digital cultural heritage will be available to people worldwide and will help future generations to understand the events that took place one hundred years ago.

The collection day forms part of the Irish Government’s 1916 Centenary Programme and is being organised in partnership with the Irish Embassy and the Irish in Britain.

The new online exhibitions use fascinating objects from public and private collections to tell the individual stories of the people whose lives were changed by the Easter Rising.

Together with expert interpretation, they also aim to illustrate the legacy of 1916 and how it has inspired Ireland.
