Irish hotel cancels Royal wedding event after complaints from 'angry republicans'

A DONEGAL hotel has cancelled its royal wedding-themed event after being inundated with complaints from angry republicans.

The Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana had been set to host a special afternoon tea around the nuptials this Saturday (May 19) and even set up a Facebook event to promote it.

However, the venue opted to cancel the special afternoon tea last Sunday (May 13) and issue an apology for "any offence caused".

"The event planned for Saturday, May 19, will no longer be taking place and we would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any offence caused," a message on the Facebook page read.

The decision comes after the hotel was hit with a string of complaints from republicans who were furious at the plans [via the Irish Independent].

"As one of Donegal's most recognised hotels, we are committed to ensuring we offer our guests a quality and memorable experience," the hotel's Facebook post added.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Derry DUP councillor David Ramsey condemned the "disgusting intimidation by thugs" that forced the cancellation.

"Any hotel would see that as a marketing opportunity," he said.

"Because it doesn't matter what race or creed you are, there will be millions of people watching the wedding who are not from the unionist background."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry at St George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle and will be broadcast live on RTE.

The broadcaster has faced criticism over its decision to broadcast the wedding with Sinn Fein Fingal councillor Paul Donnelly describing it as "a disgraceful waste of taxpayers' money".

RTE has defended the decision though, arguing that there is likely to be huge public interest and that the coverage is being provided free of charge.
