A YOUNG Irish girl is in a serious condition in hospital after getting into difficulty in a swimming pool in Malta.
Family members gave the six-year-old child first aid after the incident occurred at about 5.30pm at a private residence yesterday evening.
Emergency services responded and the girl was rushed to Gozo General Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Malta Police Force said in a statement: “Yesterday, at about 2030hrs, health authorities in Gozo informed the police that a six-year-old Irish girl had been admitted to hospital following an accident at a private residence in Triq Malta, Ghajnsielem.
“Preliminary investigations by the Gozo Police revealed that at about 1730hrs the girl had found herself in difficulty while swimming in a pool.
“She was given first aid by family members until an ambulance arrived on site and conveyed her to the Gozo General Hospital.
“Later, the six-year-old was certified as suffering from serious injuries.
“A Magisterial Inquiry has been appointed into the case whilst Police investigations are still underway.”
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the incident and is ready to offer consular assistance.
