A LUCKY IRISH donkey has been rescued from floodwaters in Co. Kerry during the recent storms.
The gate to his stable in Killorglin became damaged, the donkey escaped and soon became stranded in deep water after the banks of a nearby riverbank burst.
Rowing club member Mike Fleming came to his rescue on Saturday evening, after receiving a call from his worried owner.
Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (AHAR) had issued an appeal for help and a group of rescuers from the animal shelter arrived on the scene.
They were assisted by Mr Fleming and his boat, and the team managed to tow the donkey to safety.
The donkey, named Mike after his rescuer, is recovering at the animal shelter while his stable is repaired.
A spokesperson for AHAR posted the following update on Mike the donkey on the organisation’s Facebook page: “He is now dried with towels, eating a hot mash, all cozy and warm and our vet has seen him and started him on antibiotics to prevent pneumonia.
"He has a small bit of fluid in one lung but our vet said he will recover. All he needs is loads of TLC.”
