Irish couple stranded in Australia despite paying nearly €5,000 trying to get home

AN IRISH couple have been left stranded in Australia with no easy way to get home, despite paying €4,800 in flights back to Europe.

Colm Cahill and his girlfriend Andrea are stuck in Melbourne because every time they pay for a new flight out, it gets cancelled.

Refunds either take a long time or are non-existent, so the situation is becoming more and more precarious for them.

Speaking to RTE radio's Morning Ireland, 25-year-old Colm, from Birr, Co. Offally said the couple were running our of options.

"And there's no sign of a refund from either. That was two different flights, both cancelled. The second one was cancelled within six hours. The first one we had two or three days, everything was fine, and then boom," he said.

"People are losing thousands of euro on cancelled flights."

The couple arrived in Australia back in October, but their travels have now turned into something of a nightmare.

Colm said that getting in touch with the airline has been "impossible", but added that the Irish embassy had been very helpful, despite being "bombarded with calls."

He also said that he'd been in contact with a number of Irish people in similar situations to him via Facebook.

"I don't think anyone realised there was so many of us out here in the same situation. There are people that feel trapped and like they're going to be left behind. It's scary when you add it all up."
