THE NUMBER of coronavirus cases in the Republic of Ireland has soared to 10,647 following an additional 992 confirmed cases reported by Irish and German laboratories.
527 newly confirmed cases have been reported by the Department of Health in a 24 hour gap up to 11.15am on Monday, 13 April.
The Department reports that the 465 Irish coronavirus cases reported by a laboratory in Germany, of which a number are weeks old, have also been confirmed in that time period.
A further 31 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Ireland have also passed away, with 26 of those being treated in the east, 3 in the north west, one in the south and one in the west of the country.
The victims, 18 women and 13 men, have a median age of 82, with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HSPC) reporting that 25 were reported as having underlying health conditions.
Their sad passing brings the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the Republic of Ireland to 365.
Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said;
“Today marks a milestone in Ireland’s experience of COVID-19 as we see the number of confirmed cases exceed 10,000.
“The number of community cases of COVID-19 shows why we continue to need the public health measures that we currently have in place. I understand that the current restrictions are tough, especially during a bank holiday weekend when in normal circumstances most of us would have met up with family and friends but I ask that the public continue to work with us and follow the guidelines that are in place.
“The next three weeks will prove crucial to Ireland’s COVID-19 story and by working together we give ourselves the best chance to slow the spread and save lives.”
The island of Ireland now has 12,529 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 489 deaths contributed to the virus.
