Ireland’s oldest man dies aged 107

Ireland’s oldest man, Roscommon native Michael Lambert, died peacefully on Sunday aged 107.

He was born on October 5, 1907 and lived his life in Ballintubber, Co Roscommon.

A father of ten, he and his wife Mae went on to have 22 grandchildren added to their brood over their 60 year marriage.

He spent his life working as a farmer, as well as the Land Commission and Roscommon County Council.

He was a lifelong fan of the GAA and was in Croke Park for Roscommon’s last All Ireland victory, almost 71 years ago.

Mr Lambert attributed his good health in his later years to giving up smoking more than 50 years ago.

He passed away on Sunday night in Galway’s Portiuncula Hospital.

Mr Lambert took the title as Ireland’s oldest man in November, when his predecessor Luke Dolan passed away aged 108.

Despite the pair living just 20 miles apart, they met for the first time after 106 years.
