IRELAND'S Department of Communications has approved the acquisition of Irish TV by The Irish Post.
In February, The Irish Post and Mr Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton, Dublin agreed a transaction in relation to certain business assets of Irish TV.
This transaction was subject to approval of both the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Denis Naughten.
In accordance with the Competition Act of 2002, the Minister was notified on March 22 of the proposed acquisition of certain assets of Teilifís Mhaigh Eo Teoranta, IrishTV, by The Irish Post.
This followed the clearing of the proposed merger on competition grounds by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
In accordance with the Act, the Department undertook a 'Phase 1' examination of the merger in order to determine its potential effect on the plurality of media in the state.
As a result of this examination the Minister made a determination on April 25 that the proposed media merger will not adversely affect the plurality of media in the state and, as such, that it may be put into effect.
Founded in 1970, The Irish Post has earned universal respect and continues to champion its ethos of being The Voice of the Irish in Britain.
