THERE HAVE been no new coronavirus deaths reported in Ireland for 17 days running.
The positive news comes as a further 102 new cases were announced at a National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) press briefing yesterday evening.
The new figures brings Ireland's total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 29,774.
The death toll remain at 1,777, unchanged for 17 days.
Of the 102 new cases, 75% are under 45 years of age; the younger age of the people contracting the virus is accepted as the reason there have been little to no deaths since cases began to rise in recent weeks.
However, Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health, said the rise in cases, particularly in Limerick and Dublin are being monitored "with growing concern".
"The next seven days are vital," he said, addressing the press briefing. "Everyone needs to reduce their contacts and assume any person you do meet may be carrying the virus."
Professor Pete Lunn of the ESRI Behavioural Research Unit said it was time "to plan for the winter months ahead".
"Plan for the milestones; such as Halloween, Christmas and New Years Eve within a COVID-19 environment. Be innovative in how you can celebrate safely with loved ones.
"This year will bring added challenges so prioritise your mental and physical health, know how you will invest in them each week.
"Choose your close network of social visitors this winter and prioritise members of your family or friends who may be more isolated."
