Investigation underway after woman's body discovered in water at Northern Ireland beach

POLICE in Northern Ireland have launched an investigation after the body of a woman in her 50's was recovered from the water at a Northern Ireland beach.

The body was discovered at Waterfoot Beach in the Glens of Antrim early on Monday morning.

Local police and coastguard personnel carried out the recovery operation.

The body will undergo a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death, although at is stage it is not believed to be suspicious.

Local Sinn Fein councillor Cara McShane told the Belfast Telegraph that the discovery of the woman's body was “very sad".

"Everyone's thoughts and prayers must go out to the poor woman's family,” she said.

"They will be devastated by this awful news.

"This dreadful tragedy has been a huge shock for the close-knit local community."
