YESTERDAY people across the world took part in memorial events for the victims of the Great Famine in Ireland.
Ceremonies took place in Ireland, as well as in some of the Irish Diaspora hotspots around the globe - including several in Britain.
Cardiff, Liverpool and London all marked the day with services of remembrance for the one million people who perished between 1845 and 1852.
Another million emigrated to avoid starvation during the tough years of the Famine - which was one of the most significant periods of emigration in Irish history.
