Iceland’s capital runs out of beer after 7,000 US service personnel arrive in town

BARS in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik ran out of beer after up to 7,000 US service personnel descended on the city.

Iceland Magazine reports that the sailors and marines were in port recently taking part in NATO military exercises.

It says several bars including Sæta Svínið and The American Bar ran out of supplies and had to call the local brewery for emergency supplies.

Some venues resorted to borrowing from other bars to keep up with the demand.

According to local news site Vísir, the soldiers preferred local beers and micro brews to imported lagers and more recognisable brands.

It added that local brewery Ölgerð Egils Skallagrímssonar, which makes the popular Gull, had to send out emergency supplies to the bars.

Despite the influx, which saw many bars sell twice as much beer as usual, one bar owner told Stars and Stripes magazine the sailors and marines were good-natured and caused no problems.

And with a beer in Iceland costing around £8.50 ($11.80), the visitors likely provided a boost to the local economy!
