Homeless man found dead in tent in Cork is 11th to die on Ireland's streets this month

A HOMELESS man has been found dead in a tent in Cork city centre.

The tragic discovery was made yesterday morning at around 8am in Horgan's Quay, by Gardaí who were on patrol in the area.

The man, who is believed to be aged in his 30's and who was sleeping rough in the area, was known to homeless services, according to Cork Beo.

The tragic loss of life brings the number of homeless deaths in Ireland to 11 in just one month.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed they are investigating the incident, saying

"Gardaí are investigating the sudden death of a man, aged in his 30s, that occurred at Horgan Quay, Cork City yesterday morning around 8am."

"A file will be prepared for the Coroner."

Last week, five people died in Dublin in just one week, including two women who were found dead within hours of each other at the Abigail Centre in the city centre.

A teenager who had been sleeping in his car was also found dead in an alleyway by charity volunteers who had gone to check up on him.

The worrying rise of deaths in homeless communities across Ireland, particularly in Dublin, has been described as an 'emergency' by homeless services.
