Hillary Clinton vows to “champion everyday Americans" while launching bid for the presidency

HILLARY Clinton vowed to be the “champion” of everyday people across the United States as she launched her bid to become the nation’s first female president over the weekend.

Yesterday the former US Secretary of State claimed “everyday Americans need a champion - I want to be that champion” as she kicked off her campaign for the presidency via an online video.

The 67-year-old firmly announced her attempt to secure the Democratic nomination for next year’s presidential election in a two-minute video posted on her newly launched campaign website.

“Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times, but the deck is still stacked in favour of those at the top,” she claims in the footage, before confirming that she will spend 2015 touring the country to garner support.

“I’m hitting the road to earn your vote, because it’s your time” she says, “and I hope you will join me on this journey.”

The former first lady, who was inducted into the Irish America Magazine Hall of Fame 2015 in Manhattan last month - where she was honoured for her role in the peace process and her work with women in the North of Ireland, plans to hold a more formal launch event for her presidential campaign next month.

Clinton’s 2016 bid is her second attempt to secure the Democratic nomination for the presidency.

Her first, which she launched in 2007, was lost to Barack Obama, who appointed her as US Secretary of State when he took office - a position she held from 2009-2013.
