Have the guts to face me, Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams tells those who attacked home

FORMER Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has urged those who attacked his house with explosive devices to ‘have the guts’ to face him.

The West Belfast homes of Louth TD Adams and Sinn Féin member Bobby Storey were targeted on Friday evening.

Mr Adams’ grandchildren had been playing in his driveway minutes before the attack.

The former MP and MLA for West Belfast said those responsible were “resistant to change”.

“I want to appeal to everyone to be calm. We are involved in a process of change and some people are resistant to change,” said Mr Adams.

“If our families can remain calm then we are asking for everyone else to stay calm.

“For those who were involved in the attack if they have the gumption to sneak up on our homes I think they or their representatives should come and meet me.

“I would like them to have the guts and the gumption to sit down and tell [me] what this is about.

“I would also like those who are involved in exploiting children in Derry or those who are poisoning the atmosphere in east Belfast to do the same.

“We are very open; Sinn Féin can be contacted through any of our offices.

“That’s my direct appeal to them.

“Come and sit down and explain to me what this about, give me the rationale for this action.”

'Cowardly'

North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly condemned the 'reprehensible' attacks.

“These were reprehensible and cowardly attacks on the family homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey,” said Mr Kelly.

“Grandchildren were in the driveway of Adams’ home minutes before the attack.

“I would appeal for calm. These attacks are the desperate acts of increasingly desperate and irrelevant groups.”

The PSNI said they were dealing with two incidents at separate addresses in West Belfast.
