GLASGOW has beaten off stiff competition from a number of other cities to win the rights to host the World Irish Dancing Championships in 2018.
Killarney, Dublin and Belfast all had bids in to host the prestigious event – but the Scottish city pipped them to the post and will hold the event in three years time.
The annual competition sees dancers from every corner of the globe compete for the coveted prize of world champion in a variety of categories.
Now in its 45th year, 2018 will be Glasgow’s fifth time to host what is billed as the “Olympics” of Irish dancing.
Britain is no stranger to hosting the event, as last year’s championships took place in London, with British competitors taking the top prizes in two categories.
“The Worlds” competition, run by An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha, is set to bring a significant boost to the host city - with the 2018 event expected to be worth around £14 million to the Scottish economy, as more than 14,500 dancers and supporters travel to Glasgow for the championships.
This year’s World Irish Dancing Championships are to take place in Montreal in Canada – kicking off later this month.
