GLASGOW City Council should consider a St Patrick’s Day parade to celebrate the Irish community there, a committee has heard.
The British Irish Parliamentary Assembly (BIPA) urged the Scottish authorities to do more to support their Irish community at its 50th plenary session in Dublin.
In a report coming from the session, several issues were raised - among them the lack of St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Glasgow.
Chair of the committee was Lord Alfred Dubs, who said: "The fear of community tensions has meant that there is no St Patrick’s Day parade in Glasgow, a cultural tradition and celebration that is peacefully enjoyed in many areas, including far beyond the UK.”
A commitment from Glasgow City Council to celebrate diversity was highlighted as one of the main factors in why the St Patrick’s Day celebrations should go ahead.
Other issues up for discussion included the role of football clubs in cultural identity and whether or not Irish cultural organisations should receive anti-sectarianism funding from the Scottish Government.
