GARDAÍ ARE looking to speak to three males in relation to the rape of a teenage girl in County Mayo.
The 15-year-old girl, who has not been named, was in the Charlestown area of Mayo with friends on Saturday, 26 September when she met three men who had travelled to the town in a black car.
The girls did not know the men beforehand, but it is understood they spent some time together in the town before the 15-year-old girl was raped by one of the males in the playground in the Lowpark area in the early evening.
According to The Irish Times, Gardaí are working on the assumption that the men were not local to Charlestown and had travelled from a town in the south of the country.
The girl was taken to hospital for treatment and has made a statement to Gardaí; she is said to be deeply traumatised by the attack.
The playground was immediately cordoned off after the brutal attack was reported, and the scene underwent a forensic examination by investigating Gardaí.
A spokesperson from Claremorris Garda Station, who are leading the investigation, appealed for witnesses to come forward.
In a statement, the spokesperson said:
"Gardaí are appealing to the public for information in relation to the rape of a teenage girl that is reported to have occurred at a playground in the Lowpark area of Charlestown, Co Mayo, on 26/09/2020.
"Anyone with information, particularly anyone who was in the vicinity of the Square and/or Lowpark areas of Charlestown between 2pm and 8pm, is asked to contact Garda in Claremorris on 094-9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111."
No arrests have yet been made, and investigations continue.
