Garda investigation launched after man's body discovered in undergrowth in Cork city centre

GARDAÍ have launched an investigation after a man's body was found on a riverside walking way close to Cork city centre.

The man, who is believed to have been in his 40s, was discovered dead just before midday by a passerby on the popular River Lee Walk, which runs between the city's North Mall and the Mardyke.

Emergency services were called and Gardaí quickly cordoned off the scene to allow for an examination by Garda Technical Bureau officers.

The State Pathologist's Office was notified and a full post-mortem examination will now be conducted at Cork University Hospital (CUH) by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

A forensic team from the Cork City Divisional Crime Scene Investigation Unit is also examining the scene.

Detectives are now working to confirm the identity of the deceased, who may have passed away several hours before he was found.

Investigators are also checking CCTV security camera footage from nearby businesses to try and determine the last movements of the man as well as anyone who may have been in his company.

Gardaí are keeping an open mind about the death and have stressed that the nature of their investigation will be determined by the results of the post-mortem.

Anyone who may have been in the North Mall area of Cork city centre since Monday evening is urged to contact Gardaí at Bridewell Garda Station.
