THE BODY of a man has been discovered by a passerby in the water at The Quay, Westport, County Mayo.
Gardaí have said they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the man's death and the subsequent discovery of his remains, saying they are not currently treating his death as suspicious but will await the outcome of a post-mortem in order to determine the course of their investigation.
The body, believed to be that of a man in his 30's, was discovered by a passer-by who alerted Gardaí shortly before 9am on Sunday, 8 March.
Emergency services were called to The Quay, Westport, and the man's body was removed from the water before being taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital in the neighbouring town of Castlebar.
The local Coroner has been notified and a full post-mortem exmination is expected to take place today, Monday 9 March.
Local reports state that the deceased has been named locally as 32-year-old Sean Hynes, from Ballina, Co Mayo.
It is believed he had been attending an event in Westport with friends over the weekend.
Gardaí are now appealing for information from the public in order to investigate all the circumstances of his death.
