Garda whistleblower John Wilson considering running for the Dáil

ONE of Ireland’s garda whistleblowers is considering running for the Dáil as an Independent candidate.

Retired garda John Wilson, who is at the centre of recent scandals involving the force, told The Irish Post that he is now considering running for election.

“It is something I’m giving thought too, but it would have to be as an Independent candidate,” he said.

Mr Wilson is the nephew of the former Tánaiste John Wilson, who also hailed from Cavan.

In May 2013, Garda John Wilson retired from the force following efforts to reveal what he alleged was a practice of widespread malpractice in relation to the processing of penalty points by fellow gardaí.

Mr Wilson had presented his data to a group of independent TDs following failed efforts to address matter internally.

His efforts and that of fellow whistle blower Sergeant Maurice McCabe led to an investigation by the Dail Public Accounts Committee (PAC) into the loss of revenue through failure to process penalty points.
