A GARDA was hospitalised after she was assaulted by a teenager during an incident in Limerick city on Saturday night.

The Garda was receiving treatment in University Hospital Limerick following the assault by a 17-year-old boy after she responded to a report of males acting aggressively in Cruise's Street, Limerick city at approximately 11.30pm Saturday night.

A source who witnessed the incident told The Irish Times that the teenager pushed and knocked over the Garda, who fell and hit her head off the ground.

Her injuries are believed to be minor and it is believed she has been discharged from hospital.

The 17-year-old who is believed to have injured the Garda was arrested under suspicion of assaulting a police officer. There are no details regarding if he was charged or when he might be due to appear in court.

Armed Gardaí were also on the scene of the incident in Cruise's Street, and a man in his 20s was arrested for a public order offence during the stand-off and held in Henry Street Garda Station.

Following his arrest, the man was charged for breaches of the Public Order Act and is due to appear before Limerick District Court on 9 March, 2020.
