GARDAI have issued a public warning as a number of cases have emerged of fraudsters targeting Irish people in an iTunes gift card scam.
A number of people, particularly the elderly, have been tricked into purchasing iTunes gift cards to pay off fake debts.
According to the Irish Times, a number of people have fallen victim to the scam in recent weeks.
In Wicklow and Tipperary two individuals purchased in excess of €1000 in iTunes vouchers following a bogus phone call from someone who claimed to be calling from a company that they supposedly owe money to.
The scammer directed them to make the payment by purchasing an iTunes gift card from a retailer and sharing with them the 16-digit code on the back of the card.
In Galway, another victim was scammed out of €2,200, while in Dublin, someone attempted to purchase €1,000 in iTunes gift cards at a supermarket, but a member of staff became suspicious and contacted gardai.
Gardai have now urged people to be aware that no company will request payment via iTunes or any other online vouchers. If you receive a call like this, hang up and contact gardai.
