Five dead in shooting at US newspaper office, suspect in custody

FIVE people have died in a shooting at a newspaper office in the state of Maryland in the United States.

The incident took place at the offices of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, who reportedly arrived within 60 seconds, several people were also gravely wounded in the shooting.

Police evacuated the building at 888 Bestgate Road before searching the premises.

A suspect was apprehended and taken into custody, however CBS correspondent David Begnaud said the man is refusing to give his name and has no ID on him.

He added that the man, in his 20s, used a shotgun during the attack.

President Donald Trump revealed he had been briefed about the shooting before departing Wisconsin, where he had been attending the groundbreaking ceremony of a new factory.

Anne Arundel County Police Lieutenant Ryan Frashure could not confirm whether the shooting took place in the publication's newsroom.

In a statement, Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh said prayers were with the victims and their families.

“Our community was shaken by tragedy today,” he said.

“The Capital and the Maryland Gazette are institutions that have served us well for so many years, and I have had the pleasure of working alongside the editors, reporters and photographers.

“Our law enforcement professionals responded swiftly and I thank them for protecting the public by eliminating the threat and taking the suspect into custody.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
